The MiCoCo Youth Affinity Group proudly announces that the annual 6th Grade Orientation will be taking place at Everett Middle School this year, and will feature academic, school culture and health workshops to help students transition from elementary school to middle school. The event also includes a special workshop for parents to learn how to become involved in their student’s education as they enter middle school.
MiCoCo’s Youth Affinity Group unites various youth oriented organizations in the Mission to tackle issues affecting youth in our neighborhood, and the 6th Grade Orientation aims to guide students through what could be a tough transition from childhood to adolescence, from elementary school to middle school. The early teen years are critical in a student’s development and students often struggle to adapt to the academic rigors and social culture of middle school. Parent involvement is crucial during this period as well, and with the parent workshop component we hope to provide parents with the tools necessary to support their teens.
The workshops will cover topics such as what teachers expect at the middle school level, bullying and cliques, peer pressure, puberty and health, and positive and negative aspects of online social media (what teens should and should not post on Facebook). Some workshop presenters will include collaborators from Mission Girls, Mission Neighborhood Health Center Teen Clinic, Jamestown Community Center, PODER, Mission Graduates, local teachers, and others.
The event will also include free music, fun activities, and a BBQ at the Columbia Park Boys and Girls Club, and free school supply giveaways. The best part? The entire event is FREE!
