Communication Workshop for Parents and Students: a Follow Up To the 6th Grade Orientation

Event:    Communication Workshop for Parents and Students
Date:      September 29, 2010, 5:30PM-7:30PM
Place:     Columbia Boys and Girls Club, 450 Guerrero St.

The transition from elementary to middle school is a critical period for young students as they often struggle to adapt to the academic rigors and social culture of middle school. That is why the MiCoCo Youth Affinity Group and its partner organizations created the 6th Grade Orientation, to prepare students for the next phase in their education and give parents the tools necessary to support their students.

Last month’s 6th Grade orientation was a resounding success with half of the students giving the event an A grade. Over sixty students from various Mission area elementary schools enjoyed meeting and mingling other incoming 6th graders. They walked away knowing understanding the importance of homework, time management, responsibility, as well as the risks of making negative choices. And of course the students loved receiving a backpack with free school supplies.

But introducing students to a new academic lifestyle is only the beginning. Recognizing that communication during the transition plays a key role in how a student adapts to such a major change, the Youth Affinity Group will follow up the 6th Grade Orientation with a communication workshop for parents and their students . The workshop will focus on teaching parents methods to communicate with their students during the transition period, showing students how to deal with middle school, and teaching both students and parents how to communicate with each other.

The follow up communication workshop will take place on September 29th, 5:30PM-7:30PM, at the Columbia Boys and Girls Club. Limited space will be available, so please have your student and parents sign up early. Both students and a parent must attend the workshop together.
