Recap: Community budget meeting with Supervisor Campos

Earlier this month MiCoCo in conjunction with the office of District 9 Supervisor David Campos led a community meeting with representatives from a wide range of different CBO’s from the Mission to discuss the upcoming process for the city budget for 2012-13.

Listen to what Supervisor Campos has to say about the meeting:

Many community leaders came to the meeting and discussed their concerns and planning out how the community would advocate for their programs. Some ideas that came out of the conversation included:

  • Budget Townhall with the Mayor to voice budget concerns
  • Talking to CAC members for CDBG cuts and figure out how money from redevelopment for affordable housing will continue
  • Progressive revenue measures
  • Targeting overtime money, such as reducing it or showing that it is cheaper than hiring new staff
  • Need to understand/quantify impact of cuts

Estela, Executive Director of the Instituto Familiar de la Raza gives her two cents about the meeting:

The group also talked about what the budget townhall should look like, most agreed on the following:

  • Giving everyone a chance to speak
  • Asking to not have presentations from departments, because it might take up a lot of the time for the meeting
  • Making sure Mission community voices are heard
  • Community testimonies based on solutions
  • Everyone should agree to bring 10 people
  • Show linkages between orgs

Larry Del Carlo, Director of Mission Housing Development Corporation also says what he thought about the meeting:
